Why forex alerts need much tighter thresholds

If you have only ever set crypto alerts, forex will surprise you. Major currency pairs rarely move 5% in a month, let alone a day.

Over the last year, EUR/USD moved 0.19% on a typical day and more than 0.56% on one day in ten. Its largest single day was 1.26%. Bitcoin's typical day, by comparison, was about six times larger. For EUR/USD, a 0.75% alert fired about 1.5 times a month, and a 1% alert about 0.2.

So the useful range for a rate alert is fractions of a percent. USD/INR, the price of a dollar in rupees, follows the same logic. Pick a level that is rare but reachable.

The forex price alert page lists 14 major pairs with a year of measured daily moves for each. Forex trades around the clock from Sunday evening to Friday evening US time, then stops for the weekend.
